Seduction, passion and love unrequited.
Arguably the jewel of the Boston Ballet's 51st season and Van Caniparoli's most popular work, Lady of the Camellias is a resplendent marriage of his eclectic choreography, Chopin's early works and Alexander Dumas' timeless novel. The passionate tale has inspired myriad adaptations for theatre, film and dance, including Verdi's La Traviata and the 2001 Moulin Rouge movie. Now it comes to the Boston Opera House for a run in February and March 2015.
A love story at its core, The Lady of the Camellias chronicles the relationship of 1800s Paris' most sought after Courtesan and the story's selfless heroine Marguerite Gautier and Armand Duval, a middle-class gentleman that defies conventions by falling deeply and irrevocably in love with her. The young lovers face jealousy the wrath of French society and, unbeknownst to Armand, Marguerite's illness.
