The pianist combined muscularity, tenderness and intelligence with unshowy dexterity to create interpretations of great insight and power.

Fellowship Program Participants Perform With Leading Pianist

This August sees Andris Nelsons collaborating with the Fellows of the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, along with multi-award winning instrumentalist, Paul Lewis. Together they will perform BEETHOVEN - Piano Concerto No. 3 and STRAUSS - An Alpine Symphony, at the orchestra's renowned Massachusetts base.

The musicians making up the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, who will perform these two great works, are Fellows selected from around the world for a prestigious summer academy. This intensive program is specially designed for those in advanced musical studies. Under the guidance of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and a select few guest performers, these young musicians are able to hone their skill set by learning from the masters of their craft. Originally founded by Serge Koussevitzky as The Berkshire Music Center in 1940, the Tanglewood Music Center Fellowship Program has continued to provide essential resources for emerging music professionals, and each Fellowship is supported solely by donations.

As for the pieces being performed, while Beethoven's only minor-key concerto needs little introduction, the lesser known An Alpine Symphony was completed in 1915 and is considered part of the "tone poem" genre, with Strauss depicting a day in the mountains as inspired by a childhood outing.
