The stage adaptation that everyone's been waiting for, Moulin Rouge!, is finally here! Opening last Friday (August 3rd) it seems like the musical version of Bazz Luhrmann's 2001 epic certainly dazzled the critics.
The New York Times was full of praise, especially for stars of the show Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, '...when Ms. Olivo makes her entrance on a trapeze, singing ""Diamonds Are Forever"" with a Shirley Bassey huskiness, she is just the sort of flower that would grow from such fecund soil' and also dubbing Tveit as 'shining'.
The U.K's The Stage awarded the production five stars (!) and said that 'If we must have jukebox musicals, I only wish they were all as vivacious and utterly exhilarating as this' continuing with 'The polish with which it is all executed makes for a breathtaking spectacle'. They also commented on Tveit and Olivo's performances saying, ' Thanks to gorgeous performances from Karen Olivo and Aaron Tveit as the unhappy lovers... Tveit lends an astonishing, impassioned rock roar of a voice to tear into Sting’s Roxanne; Olivo has a sultry grace but also immense vocals as she tears into a medley that includes Diamonds are Forever...'
What is Moulin Rouge! The Musical about?
The year is 1900 and Christian, a young poet and talented writer has come to Paris to pursue a career and become a member of the Bohemian movement there. Christian ends up falling hopelessly in love with Satine, the star of the infamous Moulin Rouge, however, Satine has already been promised to the unscrupulous Duke. A love triangle ensues, as Christian and Satine try to stay together against all odds they are led down a dark and dangerous path but Satine is holding a terrible secret of her own...
