DISAPPOINTING...

This is my third Huntington Theater play but the most disappointing thus far. The actors were excellent but unfortunately the writing and content fell short. The subject has so much comedic potential that it is hard to imagine a play coming out of it that is any less than absolute hilarity. It is no surprise that the audience barely ever laughed throughout the tedious 1 hour and 40 min duration of the play. The actors were good enough to save the day and make the experience a bearable one.

WE ALL FALL DOWN

Rythm and content is tedious. There is no intermission during which time one could graceful leave.

WE ALL.... WANTED TO LEAVE

We started checking our watches 15 minutes into this play. It was cringeworthy and unwatchable. What was advertised as a heart-wrenching comedy could not have disappointed more. The most clever part of the performance was the voice over in the first 2 minutes where they encourage you to turn off your phone, point out where the exits are, and remind you to call your mother. The humor died there. The play had brief moments of tender authenticity that were overshadowed by unrealistically over the top characters. Each having issues too large to unpack meaningfully in a 90 minute production. This play gave our group emotional whiplash and was a trudge through overused stereotypes of the suburban family unit.

CRINGE WORTHY

While I can't fault the acting, the content was virtually non-existent. It did nothing to inform or entertain. If I could have left, I would have. I used to have season tickets to the Huntington and this is my first return in a couple of years. It will be my last. Other theater companies seem better able to choose plays that work.
