OUTSTANDING TALENT DELIVERS INCREDIBLE MATERIAL IN AN EMOTIONAL JOURNEY THAT IS SO VERY ENTERTAINING

To be honest I loved the score to this show and was worried the show would be a letdown like Hamilton in Chicago was ...but Dear Even Hansen is amazing the cast delivers a performance as great as can be imagined after listening to the cast album ! Ben Levi Ross plays Evan with an honest and raw emotion that touches the hearts of everyone in the house. Maggie’s Zoey is phenomenally well delivered and brings such life to the relationships on stage ! Really such an amazing night of theatre. If you leave the theater after watching this cast not having all your feels exposed you really must be dead inside:)

POIGNANT, TOPICAL, SUPERB!

DEH is quite simply the best original musical around. Its well deserved Tonys (6 total, 2017) speak for themselves, but there is something truly magical about this show that sets it apart. The touring company is excellent. Ben Platt made a splash as the original Evan Hansen on Broadway, but Ben Levi Ross who plays Evan in the touring company is just as outstanding. His Evan is different than Platt's, but equally as moving and riveting. I saw the performance on opening night at DPAC. It was flawless. The score by Pasek and Paul is gorgeous/lyrical; the book by Steven Levinson is powerful. Bring tissues! There are lots of tears, but lots of laughter, too. It's a musical that tackles very difficult topics with sensitivity and intelligence. There's much to absorb for teens and adults who see the show, and invariably connect with the characters and situations. If you can still get a ticket: do! It's so worth it!

WELL WORTH IT

An excellent production of the award winning musical. Starting with the set design, it was a creative use of panel to showcase the modern virtual world that we live in. The lighting design was great in accentuating the moods of the songs and the characters. The color combination (blue and blue) was showcased throughout the set as could be expected. Moving onto the sound, I found the title character Evan Hansen played by Ben Levi Ross a bit low/muffled in the beginning. This became apparent in the duet, "Only Us" with Zoe played by Maggie McKenna where it was hard to hear Evan’s parts. The choreography was good. Not a lot of dancing in this musical, for the few pieces like “Sincerely Me” the movements were comical intentionally so. Lastly, the singing and music. The music and lyrics by Pasek And Paul is just great. My seatmates were fortunate that I didn’t sing along. And regarding the actual singing, it was enough to bring tears to my neighbor and definitely a few sobs from the rest of the audience during the numbers “You will be found” and “So Big/So Small” if not others. Having heard Ben Platts (Evan Hansen -original cast) I was pleasantly surprised by Ben Levi Ross and his renditions. Definitely worth one showing if not two.

This show had the audience in the palm of their hands. A realistic look at what our high school kids can face and how easy it is to misunderstand. Excellent actors! Go see this!

First half good. Second half lacking follow through. Poor audio at times...could not understand actors. Wish there wouldnt be so much comedy on such a serious issue as suicide. Music was good though.

GOOD MUSIC, MESSAGE, MAJOR TECH ISSUES!

Saw the 2:00pm matineee yesterday 10/18/18. Show was PLAGUED by tech issues. We the audience didn't know but for the fact they stopped the show 4 times. At the top after Evan Hansen did his first monologue, stopped show 3-4 minutes into it. People thought it was part of the show, until the asked the actor to leave the stage! Right before end of 1st Act, took a 25 minute break due to tech issues, combined with the show starting almost half hour late. I felt bad for actors who were wonderful as was the music. As an adult, I felt the target audience was jr & sr high schoolers and parents. Still a good meaningful show, but had I not one discount tix I would not have paid full price for the tickets.

IF YOU SAW THIS ON BROADWAY, SKIP IT.

I saw this on Broadway and it blew my mind- it was so incredibly beautiful and touching. Just took my parents to see the Chicago production and I give it a big meh. Voices don’t even begin to match up, performers are “playing” actors who created the original roles, staging has changed some- but is not impactful. Sobbed through every moment on Broadway, didn’t shed a single tear tonight.

GOOD BUT NOT GREAT!

I had heard all the hype after hearing friends who saw the show on Broadway talking... But the Chicago performance is not up to Broadway level. While the show and message are good I kept thinking about the tech mis-haps and opportunities for improvement. Band drowned out some vocals, actors are very hard to hear during certain ranges (that they probably shouldn’t be singing), lighting in last scene hurt my eyes, some actors seemed to be over acting... Kind of takes away from the emotional impact the show could have delivered.

DISAPPOINTED

Had really high expectations after family members had seen the Broadway production and expected to be really affected by emotional impact. In fact the Houston touring production totally undercut the visceral impact by technical issues. The break in the action seemed very amateurish due to some technical issue. Far worse was the audio imbalance. Singing by main characters below par but far worse the were miked to screaming thus no subtlety or true feeling. Very sad. Seats ere exceedingly uncomfortable.Wouldnot recommend.

DISAPPOINTED WITH VENUE

Saw Dear Evan on Broadway in Nee York and was excited to bring my extended family to see it this Thanksgiving. Saw it 11/29/2019 at 7:30pm. I got tickets on Row KK Section C in the Orchestra section because it was the only place with 8 seats together. First, the computer screens for the tech people were FACING us with blinding white light the ENITRE show. Horrible!! It was very quiet at times, they need to turn it UP in the back to hear over the SQUEAKY chairs in there, for Gods sake people, sit still!! On the seating map it appeared we were in the middle, but we were at the absolute back under the balcony, couldn’t see actors faces or hear them often. So it took me out of it because it was incredible in NYC. The singers were amazing, Evan was better than in NYC, just wow. Really wish it had been louder and their computers weren’t in our faces the entire time, really unfortunate. If you go here sit as close to the front as you can so you’re not distracted by the computers.

POOR ACOUSTICS

I just saw the show in San Diego. The acoustics were so poor that at best one could understand 60% of the words. In addition, the music was loud enough to drown out the voices. The actors talked so fast that there was little chance to understand what they were saying (or singing). Friends who have seen this play in NYC or London loved it. I think the venue, and possibly the elocution of the touring cast, really does a disservice to this play.
