A LOVING ADAPTATION

This is a charming and innovative way to adapt such a dense middle-grade/ya novel. The show's writer's clearly wanted to do make their adaptation as faithful as possible to the books (admirable considering the time/tech constraint that come with a traveling show). The songs definitely resembled the pop-rock style that's become more popular with shows like Dear Evan Hansen and Be More Chill. So being a It all came together really nicely in the second act with some very fun musical numbers. It was also delightful to see the small ensemble slide into different roles throughout the show. All in all, this was a fun night out at the theater that made me want to reread the books ASAP. Truly the only downside is that as much as I'd love a sequel the musical theater format makes it pretty much impossible to continue the series.

LOVED IT!

Fantastic show. Kudos to Mirvish for bringing it here. Chris McCarell and Jorrel Javier were outstanding! My 11yr old has read pretty much all the Rick Riordan books. I read lightning thief this last week :). Amazing what 7 hugely talented actors can do. We go to a lot of Mirvish shows. This was well worth it. Helps if you’ve read the book ;)

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL

I want my money back. At $95 a ticket plus tax, Mirvish Toronto, owes me over $600 plus time wasted for the six of us. If there was a way to invoice them, I would. Music sounded like it was written by Sum41 or Simple Plan or Good Charlotte...wining teenage angst screaming. Volume was unbalanced so you couldn't hear exactly what was being said. The set was underwhelming and cheap (scaffolding, scaffolding, scaffolding). I know it's supposed to have an off-broadway feel, but this was 10 blocks away. Being a fan of the Percy books and films, these characters lacked essence that made the audience connect to them unless you were under the age of 10. The lead was forgettable. Grover was the strongest player. We all left at intermission. Mirvish: Disappointing. Burned.

SO BAD.

Oh my gosh this was awful. Perhaps I’m overly spoiled having regular access to the incredible performances at the 5th, but this show was so bad we left at intermission. We love the Percy Jackson books and movies but the cast of this show should not have been allowed on stage at the 5th. The songs and vocal talent were angsty pop songs and the choreography was terrible. Huge waste of money. Would rather sit at home and watch reruns than be subjected to the remainder of this high school level performance. This show would be more at home in a park with $10 tickets. Not a world class venue that charges what it costs to see a show in downtown Seattle. Don’t go.
