90s kids rejoice, because Jagged Little Pill is now a musical. Debuting at ART, this show delves into the themes of the album to tell the story of a modern family dealing with issues of race and gender. Alanis Morissette herself is a close collaborator on the project, working alongside Oscar winner Diablo Cody (Juno), who has written the book. The score, arranged by Next to Normal's Tom Kitt, is comprised of songs from the album as well as other material from throughout Morissette's career, and Tony-winner Diane Paulus (Hair, Pippin) directs.
The Album that Defined an Era
Outside of Nirvana's
Nevermind, there wasn't an album which impacted American music in the 90s as much as Jagged Little Pill. A complete break from Morissette's first two records of Madonna-inspired electro-pop, it was a grungey burst of angst and frustration, co-written by lyricist Glen Ballard. Containing the tracks 'Ironic,' 'You Outta Know,' and 'Hand in My Pocket,' it proved a monumental commercial and critical success, earning five Grammy Awards and going on to sell more than 33 million copies worldwide.
