PlaysOff Broadway Shows

The play that was almost lost to the ages

Multi award-winning director (Spring Awakening) Michael Mayer returns to helm a brand-new world premiere drama at Harvard, Rob Roth's WarholCapote, as part of The American Repertory Theater's Harvard 2017/18 season. Based on a series of tapes discovered in the late 2000s, the script is based recordings of the two artistic legends discussing putting on a Broadway play in the Seventies! In fact, all the dialogue spoken in the play is taken verbatim from the recordings, in a production that they never got to stage. It's a play, about a play that never saw the light of day, until now.

What is it about?

Two cultural behemoths came together during the last years of the 1970s to create a play together; sadly their production was never to see the stage in its original form. However, when Rob Roth discovered the tapes in the late Noughties, he decided to bring their conversations to the stage in an original work. Ranging through their hundreds of hours of conversations, the intimacy and creativity borne out of their collaboration is plain to see (or rather hear!). Now these two voices of pop culture are finally heard again; perhaps not as they were originally intended, but in a way that we can appreciate their works all over again.

The play has been created with the support of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the Truman Capote Literary Trust.
