What Did The Critics Think of Hello, Dolly! In Boston?

Now playing through to August 25.

The four-time Tony-winning revival of Hello, Dolly! has landed in Boston! With Broadway legend Betty Buckley starring as the famous Dolly Levi, what did the critics think of this sparkling revival?

The Boston Globe was full of praise for the production, especially for its star, saying "Buckley can win over the audience simply by stopping and turning on her high-wattage smile; she has that kind of star power...She plays Dolly like a loving puppetmaster, full of mischief and schemes, while dedicated to making sure other people find happiness".

They continued their praise with the rest of the cast saying " [Buckley] is in great company playing opposite Stadlen, another Broadway legend, who not only fits the role of the curmudgeonly Horace Vandergelder like a glove, but whose gift for comic timing if worth the price of admission."

The Boston Herald was also full of praise saying "'Hello, Dolly!' is timeless...the musical pulls equally from classic tropes: vaudevillian slapstick, Shakesperean love triangles, Rodgers and Hammerstein-inspired melodies and a collective love for grand dames of Broadway".

What is Hello, Dolly! about?

In 1880s New York a rich and cantankerous widower by the name of Horace Vandergelder is on the lookout for a wife. To help him on his quest he engages the services of professional matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi, but little does he know that Dolly has his perfect match in mind from their very first meeting - herself! Now all she has to do is make Horace realize it as well...

Hello, Dolly! is now playing at the Citizens Bank Opera House until August 25.
