The Reviews Are In! What Did The Critics Think of Dear Evan Hansen?

Author News DeskNews Desk, July 15th, 2019

Now playing at the Citizens Bank Opera House.

The Broadway smash hit, Dear Evan Hansen, has finally landed in Boston! Opening at the Citizens Bank Opera House on July 10th, what did the critics think of this six-time Tony-winning tear-jerker?

The Boston Globe was full of praise for the Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul creation saying, "Book writer Steven Levenson has devised an intricate, savvy plot, and the composing team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul have created a host of heartfelt songs that propel Levenson’s narrative forward".

They also praised stars of the show Ben Levi Ross as Evan and Maggie McKenna as Zoe Muphy with "As Evan, Ben Levi Ross delivers a sharply drawn portrait that captures the 17-year-old's combination of on-edge intensity and nearly paralyzing awkwardness" and "...Zoe Murphy...portrayed by the luminous Maggie McKenna, who sings so beautifully you wish she has more musical numbers".

WBUR mirrored the Globe's sentiment, stating that "it is on the human scale that 'Dear Evan Hansen' triumphs" before continuing with "Director Michael Greif...helms a tight, fluid, never maudlin production filled with implicit rather than hammered question about human failings magnified by internet genies that cannot be squeezed back into their lamps."

What is Dear Evan Hansen about?

Teen angst and grief collide in this intelligent take on what it means to be young, in love, an outcast and lonely in modern life. With a book by the award-winning, up and coming young writer Steven Levenson (Masters Of Sex and Wayward Pines), and helmed by the three-time Tony nominee Michael Greif (the man behind the 1996 smash hit Rent and most recently If/Then), Dear Evan Hansen is making its mark as one of the most socially relevant musicals in recent years.

Dear Evan Hansen is now playing at the Citizens Bank Opera House through to August 4.
