They All Brought The Goods: Steve Miller, Journey, and Def Leppard

5/5

6th August 2024

On an extremely hot night at Fenway Park, Steve Miller, Journey, and Def Leppard were all fantastic. Unlike previous shows reviewed, all three acts had great sound boards and mixers. Steve struggled a little with his voice at times, but he's almost 80 so I give him a pass. His band was awesome. I was surprised to see mostly bad reviews of Journey in their recent shows, but they were on point tonight, with Arnel hitting all of the high notes, excellent sound throughout, and an enjoyable mix of Neil's (still amazing) guitar solos. They played all of the hits, the crowd sung along, and was very enthusiastic. Any Way You Want It was the pinnacle of the show for me. Def Leppard blew the doors off the park! Highlights included Rock of Ages, Armageddon It, Bringin' On the Heartache, and Photograph. Joe Elliot noted in the middle of their set that he had been fighting a respiratory virus for the past 30 hours and almost cancelled the show, but he was in fine voice and carried on like a champ. He had fantastic backing by his two stellar guitarists Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell, and Rick Allen was clearly having a great time pounding out the beats with his (one) arm and feet! The mostly acoustic set in the middle of the show seemed to be the place for Joe to regain his voice, which he succeeded in doing. He thanked the crowd for being "special." It was a great night!

I thought for sure one of the crew would stop the show, and fix the volume mix and get it right. It was so obvious to everyone in the stands, something was wrong. I left my seat and went down the field to talk to Fenway security about the terrible sound from the speakers. He said they sent a message to the sound tent, and it was out of their hands. I am again in shock to hear so many comments from other shows out the sound issues. “Fire the sound Crew/ manager”. I doubt they will get an invite back to Fenway. Boston music fans are crazy supportive at Fenway, but Journey stuck out last night. Hopefully they get word to fix this problem, before it ruins fan loyalty. The sound crew needs to have ears in the stands to help guide and adjust s sound levels. I’ll be watching the reviews to see if they fix it. Hats off to the Fenway crew for managing the concerts. Perfect place to see your favorite band !

I had a blast at Fenway Way park 2018 Aug. 10,11,12. Seeing all performers on the three nights Peter Wolf, Jimmy Buffett, Billy Joel, Cheap Trick, Def Leppard and Journey. I was most excited about seeing Journey for the second time since seeing them in Aug 2017 in Laconia NH. I always enjoyed their music and could not believe how good they sounded in the smaller NH amphitheater. Arnel Pineda was amazing as was all bandmates. The sound mix was perfect and sounded like the recordings. Fenway Park has a perfect speaker / sound system and every show is right on with the quality of instrument mixing and crystal clear sound. I had a good seat about twenty rows off the field opposite the stage. Cheap Trick and Def Leppard were amazing, then Journey started their set. I was in total shock of the total distortion coming out of all the speakers. The Bass guitar and Bass Drums completely dominated the speakers and sounded like booming thunder against the ears. Journey probably did one of their best shows that I've seen before and my family loved them. Def Leppard was also amazing but they were noticeably louder than Journey. Poor Steve Miller Band opened directly into the 6:00 pm sunlight and after about the first three songs was struggling as he wore his jacket in the 90+ heat. Only drawback that will keep me from going back is the 18.00 beer, 13.00 hot dog, 75.00 parking, and 6.00 water. You cant take a family any more. Ill just enjoy my CD's

Def Leppard

Overall great show. Def Leppard's show had lots of energy, great visuals, and the band sounded very tight. As far as the other two, Journey and Cheap Trick not sure what was going on. I've heard Cheap Trick fairly recent and they were great. Not tonight. Combination of poor sound quality I believe had a lot to do with it. At points you couldn't hear vocals and certainly instruments. Just an all around BAD mix. As for Journey Neil Schone still has it and the rest of the bad was great. I feel the same bad mix contributed to their portion also.
