Featuring Special Guests Thomas Wilkins & James Carter
The Boston Symphony Orchestra welcomes principal conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and music director of the Omaha Symphony Thomas Wilkins for a jazz-tinged, toe-tapping program of African-American and Puerto Rican composers. Esteemed saxophonist James Carter joins the ensemble for an electrifying performance in contemporary classical composer Robert Sierra's 'Concerto for Saxophones and Orchestra', a piece written specifically to showcase Carter's virtuosic playing against a classical-meets-jazz backdrop.
The evening's program also includes Dolphus Hailstork's 'An American Port Of Call' - a vibrant sonic celebration of the Virginia city Norfolk, Symphonic Reflections by Florence Price the first African-American female composer to have her work performed by a major symphony orchestra and Duke Ellington's 'A Tone Parallel to Harlem' from the Harlem Suite, a piece that evokes the hustle and bustle of the music-filled New York neighbourhood.
