Boston Symphony Orchestra - Andris Nelsons conducts Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades

Why see Boston Symphony Orchestra - Andris Nelsons conducts Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades?

Tchaikovsky Brothers' Masterpiece

One man's dangerous obsession with winning at the card tables drives this devastating tale of terror by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and his brother, librettist Modest Tchaikovsky. Under the command of conductor Andris Nelsons, Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Lyric Opera combine to present the haunting masterwork, with soprano Kristine Opolais taking the central role of Lisa, and tenor David Butt Phillip as Hermann. Joined by a stunning ensemble cast of singers, as well as the voices of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, The Boston Lyric Opera Chorus and the BSO x NEC Honors Children's choir, expect a grand showing in this thrilling performance.

What Is It About?

We're taken back to the St. Petersburgh of Catherine The Great, where opulence and terror walk hand in hand as we follow a desperate soldier, in love with a woman above his station, whose missions via the gaming tables prove to be his chaotic undoing. Bursting with Russian romanticism, The Queen of Spades is an intense and sweeping work that asks how high would you bet on the odds of success.
