Hip Hop Holiday Fun For The Whole Family
A whirlwind of classical ballet, hip hop, swing, flamenco, urban tap and step, Tony Williams' Urban Nutcracker turns the traditional tale on its head and gives it new life. Now in its 20th year, the electrifying production reflects the rich multiculturalism of Boston by forgoing the stuffy Victorian-era setting, making it relatable with modern music and choreography as danced by kids and adults of all shapes, sizes and abilities.
This delightful homespun take on a Christmas classic begins with a street scene filled with the city's iconic landmarks, doo-wop singers and hip hop dancers where the audience is introduced to local youngster Clarice, whose father is away on military service. Tchaikovsky's timeless score blends seamlessly with Duke Ellington's jazz suite, punctuating a Christmas party where Drosselmeyer gives Clarice a Nutcracker doll, that not only comes to life, but pops and locks too! Clarice goes on the adventure of a lifetime, learning the greatest gift of all is the people we love and the love they give in return.
