P. Carl's transition memoir adapted into play
A.R.T. plays host to the world premiere of a powerful new play based on the memoir of trans writer, artist and activist P. Carl. Adapted from his personal writings, Becoming A Man charts the deeply personal emotional personal journey Carl went on when he made the decision to transition gender, putting potentially his entire personal life, relationships and work on the line.
Carl lived as a woman for five decades, before, at the age of 50, his true identity awakened within himself. Grappling with the fears, the unknowns, the need for bravery and even an induction into the patriachy which his newfound identity would bring him, the acclaimed book is a powerful insight into the inner world of a transitioning individual, delighting and fascinating readers. This new adaptation is brought to you by director Diane Paulus, winner of the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for her 2013 Pippin revival.
