Boston Ballet - Genius at Play

Boston Ballet - Genius at Play at Boston Opera House

Why see Boston Ballet - Genius at Play?

Boston Ballet 2018/19 Season Opener

The Boston Ballet opens its exciting 55th season at the Boston Opera House with a celebration of the kinetic mastery and creative genius of choreographer Jerome Robbins and longtime collaborator Leonard Bernstein. To mark these musical luminaries' 100th birthday, the company presents a trio of pieces that traces Robbins journey from fledgeling artist to dance legend at three pivotal points in his career.

The program begins with Robbins' first ever work Fancy Free. Written at the young age of 25 with up-and-coming composer Bernstein, the ballet brought a modern American sensibility to the stage in the symbolism of sailors on shore leave in NYC. It served as a pre-cursor to the Tony-winning Broadway smash hit On The Town and catapulted the duo to worldwide fame.

Following this is the experimental Interplay, Robbins' second ballet that pairs Morton Gould's jazzy orchestration with both classical and vernacular choreography. Rounding off the evening is Glass Pieces, one of his later works. Sweeping in scope and exquisite abstraction, the work captures the heart of the city with mesmeric urban dance and rapid, electrifying manoeuvres.
