Don't confuse this with the Andrew Lloyd-Webber production - Yeston and Kopit's Phantom is a wonderful operetta version of Gaston Leroux's novel Phantom of the Opera. The musical was already in the making with an almost-complete score when the world famous Lloyd-Webber version beat them to it in 1986. But despite being overshadowed, Phantom remains a wonderful alternative exploration of the Phantom's past, fantastically conjuring the 1890s Parisian atmosphere.
